Good news on the new Nook Touch reader – it runs Android 2.1. This means that apart from most other Android applications, the reader will be able to boot an alternative software for reading – such as FBReader, Aldiko or via Kindle for Android.
The Android-powered dual-screen device is no longer in stock and production on new units has ceased. Company officials claim the investor has pulled funding.
Spring announced the $399 Alex e-reader late in 2009, sporting a dual-screen 6-inch E Ink display, a second 3.5-inch Android-powered touchscreen, and Wi-Fi connectivity. The company began advertising preorders in March of 2010.
Alex has no dedicated bookstore, unlike the Kindle, Nook and iPad. Spring Design announced plans in the summer of 2010 to bring it to the Borders eBookstore but last week, Borders filed for bankruptcy.
