    My old friend LBook

We have a 4 years old e-Ink reader LBook – a clone of the Chinese brand Jinke. It’s our faithful companion in many trips, but the battery life is not longer a month, unlike when it was a new gadget. During our 10-hour night trip by a Romanian train we had to recharge the LBook V3 battery. We found only one working plug in the hallway of the train, and folding seats made the loading procedure funny.

E Ink and Epson develop 300 dpi electronic paper device

Epson and E Ink announced the joint development of a 9.7-inch 300-dpi electronic paper device with a resolution way higher than that of existing e-readers.

The 300-dpi display will support 2,400 x 1,650 pixels, promising to deliver “razor-sharp text and images”, compared with the 160 dpi and 600 x 800 resolution of existing readers such as Barnes & Noble’s Nook and the Amazon Kindle. And they say that, despite the higher resolution, readers will be able to turn pages faster than on existing devices.

E Ink will manufacture, sell and support the newly developed 300-dpi ePaper displays. Epson will manufacture, sell and support a high-resolution, high-speed display controller platform optimized for controlling E Ink’s high-resolution display.

Borders sale: $60 Kobo Wireless e-reader

We weren’t terribly impressed with the Kobo Wireless e-reader when we reviewed it, but now that Borders is discounting it in some stores to $59.99, we’re actually thinking it might make a decent pick up if you’re looking for an e-ink e-reader that supports ePub files.

The Spring Design Alex eReader is dead

The Android-powered dual-screen device is no longer in stock and production on new units has ceased. Company officials claim the investor has pulled funding.

Spring announced the $399 Alex e-reader late in 2009, sporting a dual-screen 6-inch E Ink display, a second 3.5-inch Android-powered touchscreen, and Wi-Fi connectivity. The company began advertising preorders in March of 2010.

Alex has no dedicated bookstore, unlike the Kindle, Nook and iPad.  Spring Design announced plans in the summer of 2010 to bring it to the Borders eBookstore but last week, Borders filed for bankruptcy.
